Description FFAB 2017-06-17 15:23:35 UTC
This bug has been reported at launchpad.net, #163915
My notebook is a HP Pavilion 17-g164ng with an AMD A10-8780P APU.

The sytem (Ubuntu 16.04.2, kernel 4.8.0, UEFI) does not work when not booted using workaround parameters:

nomodeset: resolution 800x600
nomodeset xforcevesa: 1600x900 (optimal resolution)
amd_iommu=off: "boot finished" sound within a minute, black screen, ssh login possible
no parameter: no boot, no (remote) access, no dmesg, shut down by pressing off button for several seconds.

I have reported this bug at launchpad.net on 2016-11-05.

At that time I used 16.04.1, kernel 4.4.0. While booting, the screen was black, one flash, black backlight on-off-on. After more than three minutes, remote (ssh) access was possible, reboot by SysRQ B.

Recently I tested upstream kernels.
The results depend on the update-state of the installation.

Using installed Version 16.04.2, kernel 4.8.0-36 for installation of the upstream kernel, booting without workaround parameter:

"boot finished" sound after 45 sec., screen black, no further HDD activity, ssh login possible, SysRQ reaction.

Using the actual, updated system, kernel 4.8.0-54 for installation of the upstream kernel, booting without workaround parameter:

no "boot finished" sound, no remote login (ssh).
Reboot/shutdown by SysRQ keys after about 3 minutes possible.

Comment 2 FFAB 2017-07-03 22:29:46 UTC
I have set the importance to "high, critical". See comment #26 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1639517
Comment 3 Andrew 2017-08-21 18:29:57 UTC
Have you tried iommu=soft kernel parameter?

you should provide the log of a faulty boot (i.e. dmesg), showing the different boot modes. That would help the devs to see what actually happens

Testing amdgpu-pro dkms from amd.com

as suggested by xorg(Ubuntu) https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1639517/comments/30

Download: following the direct link to the drive on site

https://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/AMDGPU-PRO-Install.aspx

8.8.2017:

amdgpu-pro-17.30-458935.tar.gz (for kernel 4.4 or 4.8)

27.08.2017:
amdgpu-pro-17.30-465504.tar.gz (for Ubuntu 16.04.3)

1. Testing amdgpu-pro-17.30-458935 - installed kernel 4.8.

Installing amdgpu-pro-17.30-458935 according link -and adding user to group video
After installing: logout.
Then - a Login wasn't possible:
login started - and was finished a short time later with login-screen.
Reboot without workaround parameters:
boot process started:
gray screen - flash - black screen - messages - splash screen - messages - read in line: maintenance or continue -> continue - error messages - stopped by SysReq B - reboot without workaround parameter - similar cycle. stopped by SysReq B.
Now reboot was not possible.
No item in EFI/esp. I tried to fix it using a live System and my "primary" installation Kubuntu - it didn't work. So I reinstalled my "primary" System Kubuntu.
Now starting the test installation (workaround parameter nomodeset) failed - file system repair of system and data partition.
I didn't repeat the test. I have no log files.

2017_09_15 - 2017_10_06
=======================

2. Testing amdgpu-pro-17.30-465504 - installed kernel 4.10.

I tested several times dkms in September and October

A: Installing procedure
Playing back a saved system partition,

installing dkms according link- group video -> <actual user>.

A few times I installed the AMD proprietary microcode driver.

After installing reboot (workaround parameter)
Login wasn't possible - a started login was finished with login screen.

B.Test

Boot without workaround parameter.
optional kernel parameter "noplymouth boot_delay=<up to 400>
As boot process was never finished, reboot using SysRq (-> C:)
Starting my "primary" installation Kubuntu and run fsck of the dkms system partition,

C. results
The boot process was never finished;
reboot either SysRq + b or SysRq + r|e|i|s|u|b.
Results were sometimes reproduced - but it was not predictable when they were.
Normally there was a never ending stream of messages incl. some error messages or a loop of always the same messages - all these tests were stopped by SysRQ.
Some test runs ended with kernel panic - then a restart was only possible by "hard off" (several seconds "power off" button).

The results of fsck also were not reproducible. Using SysRq + b : fsck shows error messages.
Using SysRq + r|e|i|s|u|b: sometimes filesystem state was clean. Only in that case boot runs of that installation were comparable.

During some test runs (kernel parameter "boot_delay") I took series of photos - but none of these series is complete (partly the messages on these photos are not readable). I don't attach any.

A method how to redirect boot messages printed to the system console to a file I didn't find, respectively I didn't manage to run bootlogd - available in the repositories of Ubuntu; I couldn't find detailed tips, how to configurate bootlogd

Comment 31 FFAB 2017-11-30 16:25:48 UTC
to the dev team:
Since 18 month I'm using Ubuntu on my notebook with restricted functionality - esp graphic functions; without kernel parameter "nomodesetting" when booting, the screen remains black. I posted this situation in Nov 2016 - but up to now there is no solution available (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1639517, bug #1639517; https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=101483).

I ask you, whether in the foreseeable future there will be an driver available for "my" processor A10-8780P APU, R8 extreme edition 4C+8G,display Carrizo and display Topaz XT [Radeon R7 M260/M265].
Who can give me an answer?

This is an upstream bug tracker, not an Ubuntu one. If the problem is fixed with upstream 4.15-rc3, please resolve this report as fixed.
Comment 36 FFAB 2017-12-14 22:37:19 UTC
Today I set this bug to "resolved fixed", importance to "medium, normal". Afterward I checked some hw infos,
e.g. in the result of "sudo lshw -short" I miss the following line:
/0/100/3.1/0 display Topaz XT [Radeon R7 M260/M265]
So I assume, at the moment graphic and the A10-8780P APU is not yet full supported.
