I use a Logitech Trackman Marble trackball http://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/trackman-marble in Fedora 26 on x86-64.  In previous versions of Fedora, the windowing system defaulted to Xorg as opposed to Wayland.  In the these releases, I could configure this trackball to provide a mode whereby when an auxiliary button is clicked, I could thus simulate a vertical or horizontal scroll wheel.  This configuration is expressed similar to what follows in Xorg:

Namely the Z- and XAxisMapping capability.  Is there any way to replicate this in Wayland?  As it stands in Fedora 26 (no other package source used), achieving this scroll capability is dead on arrival in Wayland.  When I switch back to Xorg, I can achieve it.

AFAICT, libinput supports this with LIBINPUT_CONFIG_SCROLL_ON_BUTTON_DOWN given to libinput_config_scroll_method, but nothing in Wayland nor any window managers implemented thereupon avail such a thing.

Can you give counsel?  With a Trackman Marble, one typically instructs the small arrow buttons (https://assets.logitech.com/assets/55341/trackman-marble-gallery.png) to function as this horizontal or vertical scroll mode switcher.

From libinput-list-devices:
  Scroll methods:   button

Indicates that the button scroll method is available. You should be able to verify this with e.g.

sudo libinput debug-events --set-scroll-method=button --set-scroll-button=BTN_RIGHT

(libinput should be smart enough to pick the button 8 equivalent by default, so you only need to enable the scroll method itself or set the scroll button if you don't want that button)

Anyway, this configuration is available in the xorg-x11-drv-libinput driver so you can use it under X with libinput. As for wayland - this would have to be implemented in the compositor, sorry.

I have the same problem with Ubuntu 17.10 and wayland.
But when I do "sudo libinput debug-events --set-scroll-method=button --set-scroll-button=BTN_EXTRA" and move the trackball, I get POINTER_MOTION events. When I press the right small button and move the trackball, I get POINTER_AXIS events. So this works (at least in the console).
How can I activate the button scroll method?
