Description Sverre Froyen 2007-04-19 14:39:01 UTC
While the released version, xf86-video-ati-6.6.3, works fine when using xinerama, the current version shows nothing on the displays (it works with mergedfb). Hardware is a Thinkpad T42 laptop and an external CRT monitor. I will attach my config and log.

xorg.conf.xinerama

Start command was:
startx -- -config xorg.conf.xinerama -layout work -dpi 100

is this still a problem with xrandr 1.2 or xinerama on a more recent version of the driver?
Comment 4 Sverre Froyen 2008-12-04 14:38:41 UTC
A quick test with xorg 1.4.2 and xf86-video-ati-6.9.0 shows that xinerama still fails. Now with a

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

xrandr 1.2 work fine, however.

I'll do additional testing later.

Hi.

I'm not sure if this relates with the same problem but I think I'm experiencing the same issue. I've tried posting directly to the mailing list but I got no response so far -- maybe because my email address is from yahoo.fr and I know there had been some issues with Yahoo.

I've experienced such an issue on Gentoo Linux with xf86-video-ati-6.9.x and Xorg server >= 1.4 (IIRC) and on Ubuntu 8.10. When X starts on my laptop *and* an external monitor is plugged in (either VGA or DVI), both screens start all black, no image is displayed.

Switching to a console doesn't even work. I have to power off and restart my laptop. The machine reacts to keyboard input (at least Caps lock and Num lock) but I can't see anything else on any monitor.

OTOH starting running xrandr *after* plugging an external monitor does produce the expected results. It means I must plug my external monitor *after* X starts.

That issue never happened with radeonhd driver. This issue hasn't disappeared with the latest xf86-video-ati6.10.x.

Isn't this bug duplicate of #18104?
Comment 8 Vince C. 2009-02-01 01:52:14 UTC
Bug #16781 seems to report the same kinds of issues. Comment #3 from paul describes exactly the same situation as mine.

Here's a log while I plugged a second monitor to my laptop's DVI connector. This is really getting annoying.

Can you try with the radeon driver from git master?

It works as I also replied in my comment on bug 18104 http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18104#c29

Thanks a lot for the work.
