To clarify, you're seeing X server crashes (which take you back to GDM) when trying to change modes using the Gnome mode switching applet? Moreover, after the crash it takes awhile for GDM to come back up and display correctly, right? shirishag75, would you pls confirm Jesse's question in comment# 4? Also, a test of the tip to see if this issue still exist will be appreciated... Hi Michael, Sorry I'm on holiday atm so can't try stuff here. Doing stuff from a cyber-cafe. I'll definitely revert back to u guys once I'm back to work. 24th onwards. shirishag75, are you back to work now? :) would you please test a newer xserver and intel driver to see if this issue still there, since the bug has been quite old..? xsession-errors
This was just before logging in. Even going to Console (CTRL+F1) didn't have any effect. Had to do a hard boot.
Hi Michael, Yes, I am back on work. This is on the latest xserver-xorg & xserver-xorg-video-intel driver at my end. All and any tests you want me to do, please lemme know. ii xserver-xorg 1:7.3+8ubuntu2 the X.Org X server ii xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.2.0-1ubuntu1 X.Org X server -- Intel i8xx, i9xx display driver Lemme know what you think of it. Hi all, I tried again, this time using Screen Resolution & still it got hung up. Attaching the xrandr details & the newest .xsession-errors file. Look into it & lemme know. xrandr --verbose output
This is using RandR version 1.2

xsession-errors file
This is when verbose does say that one can go upto 1400x1050
Does it work if you just use the xrandr command to change the mode? It would be good if you could get a backtrace too, if it crashes. http://wiki.x.org/wiki/Development/Documentation/ServerDebugging has some hints on that. Bugzilla Upgrade Mass Bug Change NEEDSINFO state was removed in Bugzilla 3.x, reopening any bugs previously listed as NEEDSINFO. - benjsc fd.o Wrangler re-assigning to the reporter for answer, since NEEDINFO gone. Hi all, Jesse I tried just using xrandr & I could change resolutions on the fly without difficulty, although there have been updates to xserver-xorg, gdm as well as other things. I'm still to go through few days so I can know whether the new xserver-xorg does it right or not, but anyway here are the details. At the present I'm right now using the latest git trunk/branch packaged in ubuntu https://edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/hardy/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/2:2.2.0+git20080107-1ubuntu1 and it seems to be good. My efforts with xrandr were good shirish@Mugglewille:~$ xrandr Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1280 x 1024, maximum 1400 x 1050 VGA connected 1280x1024+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 306mm x 230mm 1400x1050@60 60.0 1280x1024 59.9* 1280x1024@60 60.0 1280x960@60 60.0 1280x960 59.9 1152x864@75 75.0 1152x864 74.8 1024x768@85 85.0 1024x768 84.9 75.1 70.1 60.0 1024x768@75 75.1 1024x768@70 70.1 1024x768@60 60.0 1024x768@43 43.5 832x624@75 74.6 832x624 74.6 800x600 99.7 84.9 72.2 75.0 60.3 800x600@85 85.1 800x600@72 72.2 800x600@75 75.0 800x600@60 60.3 800x600@56 56.2 640x480 99.8 84.6 75.0 72.8 60.0 640x480@85 85.0 640x480@72 72.8 640x480@75 75.0 640x480@60 60.0 720x400 70.1 640x350 70.1 shirish@Mugglewille:~$ xrandr -s 800x600 shirish@Mugglewille:~$ xrandr -s 1024x768 shirish@Mugglewille:~$ xrandr -s 1024x1024 Size 1024x1024 not found in available modes shirish@Mugglewille:~$ xrandr -s 1280x1024@60 So things are good atm but only time will tell :) It can only be other things as xrandr has not been updated for quite some time (or some other things which are not clear to me atm). shirish@Mugglewille:~$ dpkg -S /usr/bin/xrandr x11-xserver-utils: /usr/bin/xrandr https://edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/x11-xserver-utils Also I'm sorry i didn't carry out the debug trace as I've only one machine but if it comes again will surely do so. so, Jesse, it sounds like not our bug, right? Ok, sounds like notourbug then. Thanks for reporting & testing shirishag75. |
