See also this patch that works around the issue although I reckon the whole test should really just be dropped due to d_type's unreliability.

This still needs to be addressed in PolicyKit unless a different fix has been committed in the mean time?

Thanks David :) I did look for a similar bug at the time I found this and just assumed noone would have added one after mine and hence the ping. I guess I should have checked that there were not any newer ones ;) I'll replace the patch we use in our package to your one for completeness.
