Are you really sure you are using cairo-1.6.5?  This bug was fixed in 1.6.4.  The error message you get suggests that this is cairo 1.0.x or 1.2.x.

I concur with Behdad that this assert was removed for the 1.6 release - though please do report any problems you do encounter with the lastest stable release, 1.8.
