The problem here is not choosing a VT (which the X server already does correctly), but choosing a display number. Sorry about the phenomenal bug spam, guys. Adding xorg-team@ to the QA contact so bugs don't get lost in future. and the most egregious bashism of the year award goes to ... 'for num in {0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9}; do' ;) this looks okay to me. will commit if there are no objections.
