I use and Compaq Presario 2800
And when i close my lid (or invoke the lid button) my screen doesn't turn of using the xf86-video-ati-6.9.0 but it works if i downgrade to xf86-video-ati-6.8.0
It works in terminal but not i X.

I run slackware-current (rc1)
VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500] 1002:4c57
In xorg.conf i use Driver "ati"

What other information would be useful?

Newer versions of the driver stop the bios from touching the hw.  This prevents the bios from reprogramming the hw behind the drivers back (which often leads to locks or undesired behavior).  Everything can be controlled by sw now.  You need update your acpi scripts to use xrandr to change turn the LCD screen off when the lid is closed.
