Newer versions of the driver stop the bios from touching the hw. This prevents the bios from reprogramming the hw behind the drivers back (which often leads to locks or undesired behavior). Everything can be controlled by sw now. You need update your acpi scripts to use xrandr to change turn the LCD screen off when the lid is closed.
