log for corrupted tray
This occurred because DRI was disabled, because my Virtual was too big. I set my Virtual to the same resolution as the physical screen, and now DRI works and the system tray displays correctly. Changed bug summary accordingly. Can you please say whether https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/434376 is this bug please? There's a screenshot attached there.
