In MSN you can associate a custom smiley/emoticon to a text.
For instance you can setup that when you write (linux) a penguin is shown instead of the text.
MSN also provides a default set of additional emoticons.

butterfly should automatically parse the text and whenever it finds a reference to a protocol or custom similey it should remove the text and insert the corresponding image, and then send everything to the chat client.

Does telepathy handle the possibility to send text + images to the client?
