someone said "if you want to write portuguese use the portuguese keymap, not the spanish one".

do you say the same about english?

also the spanish keymap is used with some languages in spain that do not have specific keymap.

Ok, since I see asciitilde in 2 other places on level 3, it should not be a major trouble

This breaks longstanding tradition in the Spanish layout and can cause massive data loss with common shell commands (e.g. 'rm *~' becomes 'rm *'). It was already done before and had to be reverted.

Yes, the world may have been a better place if this had been the behavior from day one (and people would've learned to use AltGr+ñ), but changing it now is just asking for trouble and user frustration.

Keep in mind that AltGr+4 is the only tilde as marked on the keyboard, so it's what people have naturally learned to use. This is why the change is very disruptive even though there are alternative key combinations: nobody uses them.

The change I was proposing was not AltGr+4, and was not AltGr+ñ, but AltGr+¡ (open exclamation mark)
I think that changing this last combination to dead_tilde is not disruptive.

Oh. Huh, well this is odd. After the update to 1.7 my AltGr+4 became dead, but I now (upon a second look) see that the change only touched AltGr+¡. The latter should be fine. What the heck happened here.

I just reinstalled my 1.7 distro package (with the "overwrite all config files option") and all is well, even though I've never touched the es keymap before. Odd stuff. Closing again, I can't reproduce this. Sorry about the trouble.
