Description Simon McVittie 2009-11-05 06:14:19 UTC
In ConnectionManager, after "Where possible, this SHOULD be chosen from the following well-known values:", I propose to insert:

* skype - Skype
* tel - telephony (the PSTN, including GSM, CDMA, and fixed-line telephony)

Rationale:

Maemo 5 on the N900 implements these, via the connection managers telepathy-spirit and telepathy-ring, leading to Account names like ".../ring/tel/ring" and ".../spirit/skype/example".

Using tel as a general protocol name for telephony, rather than gsm or something, means we could re-use it for other connection managers that do telephony but not GSM, like telepathy-snom or any other remote control for a hardware phone, or a hypothetical IAX connection manager; this seems appropriate, given that the PSTN is one big network.

The other "prior art" that could have influenced the choice of name is telepathy-snom. However, that used a protocol name of "snom", which is clearly only appropriate for telepathy-snom, not for telephony in general.

Spec committee says yes, except that IAX might not be tel.

Rubber stamp for the spec wording?
