How would the UI look for this? Got any ideas? One option would be to change "Automatically install" to "Automatically Download/Install," and then to list out all of the different combinations in one dropdown. Probably a better option is to place a dropdown list above "Automatically install" which would be "Automatically download," and would have the options "All updates," and "Only updates which will be automatically installed" I think the above option is better, but another alternative would be to list out all of the explicit possibilities under "Automatically install" -- "All updates," "Only security updates," and "Nothing" -- in which case, the selected option might have to be changed if the user makes a wrong selection ... i.e. Any of the three options is acceptable if the user selects to Automatically install "Nothing," but if the user selects to Automatically install "Only security updates," and had selected Automatically download "Nothing," their selection for Automatically download would be changed to "Only security updates," whereas if they had selected to Automatically download "All updates," their selection would be left alone. If the user selects to Automatically install "All updates," their selection for Automatically download would always have to be switched to "All updates." Also, if you want to know how this was done in Fedora 8, I can provide screen captures later tonight. Typo: In third paragraph, above, first sentence, the first occurrence of "Automatically install" was actually meant to be "Automatically download" Sorry for any confusion. I also forgot to include one other idea -- the "Automatically download" dropdown could be hidden and revealed after "Automatically install" only when relevant and only showing the relevant options, per the user's selection under "Automatically install." Automatic Update Options in Windows XP SP3
Hmmm ... I think I may be crazy. I downloaded and installed an old Fedora 8 ISO and I can't find a configuration dialog for the automatic updates. I am quite certain it was there before, and in fact I very specifically remember missing this feature when PackageKit came along. As a consolation prize, I've attached a screen capture of how Windows XP SP3 does this. Alright ... I'm only half crazy ... I was referring to yum-updatesd do_download option: http://linux.die.net/man/5/yum-updatesd.conf There was no GUI. Heh. AFAICS PackageKit+Hawkey+DNF does that now. |
