for some reason, when xorg is compiled in 64bit, xmodmap doesn't work quite
right. it is fine if you want to remap the traditional 3 buttons and two wheel
events. however, if you have a 5 button mouse (that is, 5 buttons and the two
scroll wheel "buttons"), when you run xmodmap to remap the buttons, the system
can no longer see the extra buttons. i have confirmed this using "xev."
However, i use xmodmap from a 32bit install of xorg (it's on another partition)
and it works fine.

probably not important as it can be worked around, but it still might not be a
bad idea to fix this problem. probably has something to do with how it is
compiled on AMD64.

hrmmmm. i reinstalled Linux recently, which means i recompiled x.org. i used
different CFLAGS this time, and this time Xmodmap functions properly. went ape
with the CFLAGs last time so that probably explains it.

my fault, in other words.
