Thanks for your report.

The 1.4.14 release you are using is fairly old (Jan. 2008).

The bug you are hitting here was first fixed in cairo 1.6.0 (Apr. 2008).

I recommend you upgrade to the current cairo release, which is
1.8.8 (Jun. 2009).

All cairo releases are backwards-compatible, so you should be able to drop
a new one in without any changes to your cairo-using programs.
