Additionally, the Wiki should be hosted within the x.org or freedesktop.org domains to ensure the relevance of the URLs down the road. The Wiki and FAQ need to be created of course before this can receive closure. Please update when things are in the state where FAQ items can be added, and I will try to contribute some entries, either directly to the wiki, or via bugzilla or email, whichever is preferred. The Wiki can be hosted anywhere as long as the pointers are correct. If the pointers are on a DNS we control we can always change them when things are moved. Sorry, I think I was a bit confusing above. What I meant to say, is that it looks much more professional if the support materials and URLs referenced in the official documentation, are URLs that are within the freedesktop.org or x.org domains. Those can redirect to elsewhere, or whatnot, but it just looks more professional having x.org FAQ/support/etc. with an x.org URL, rather than pointing to some other website. The actual data can be hosted wherever it is convenient of course. An error message something like: "A fatal error has occured, which may be caused due to a bug, or misconfiguration, blah blah blah.... before reporting a bug, please read the troubleshooting FAQ located at http://support.x.org blah blah blah" Or wiki.x.org, or some other URL that looks "official". That URL can then redirect to another website, or can have DNS pointing wherever happens to be convenient. This way it allows the site to easily move around if necessary, and just looks more professional IMHO. Also, the above message content is just an example, not intended to reflect what the exact message should say. ;o) Remaining issue: redirect of wiki.x.org to freedesktop.org. Keith has just done this. |
