Running the following game demo in wine will lock up an i845 system: http://www.popcap.com/games/bejeweledtwist

First the play/buy window comes up. After clicking the play button, the window disappears, but before the screen mode changes or anything else comes up, the X session freezes 100% of the time. I can move the cursor, but the numlock won't toggle, and I have to reboot the machine to get graphics back. SSH still works.

This problem shows up in both Ubuntu Jaunty and Karmic. In Jaunty, if I install the mainline 2.6.27 kernel (no GEM), the game doesn't freeze the system and performs well. If in Jaunty or Karmic I disable DRI, the game doesn't freeze, but performs badly. So this problem might exist since the beginning of GEM.

On 2.6.33-rc6, a mode switch occurs, but I'm left at a black screen. I guess the graphics chip reset occurs and it gets unfrozen, but the state is too messed up at this point to be usable.

Also still a problem on Lucid + xorg-edgers PPA + kernel 2.6.33-rc6.

My System does not crash completely, it will crash if I try to go to console or if the screen saver runs; besides neither totem or vlc work any more.

This issue is affecting a hardware component which is not being actively worked on anymore.

Moving the assignee to the dri-devel list as contact, to give this issue a better coverage.
