I am using a laptop compaq nx9110 with a wide screen.

When I connect to an LCD project only a part of the screen is seen. Apparently,
Xorg fail to match the screen size.

I am unsure whether this is a bug or something needing configuration. What
should I do?

what video chip does your laptop have? can you attach your xorg log and
configuration file?  It's going to be a configuration issue unless your
projector can handles widescreen modes.
