Hi all,

I own an ATI Radeon 8500LE working with the opensource ati driver without DRI.

I have debian SID and , by following this guide :
http://blogs.vislab.usyd.edu.au/index.php/Steve/2004/09/09/installing_a_non_intrusive_x,
I switched from XFree86 4.3.0.1 (default on debian) to Xorg lastest CVS (dated
31 March 2005) .

DGA + Mplayer (self compiled) worked well before the switching .

After the switch I recompiled MPlayer (I've also set the correct path for Xorg
libraries and includes with ./configure ) and tried DGA .

The result is that immediatly after mplayer starts the screen goes black and
Xorg crashes . 

KDM (the K Desktop Manager ) then restarts the server and I can relogin into my
X session .

I had this problem also sometime ago, by using DRI packages for debian by
dri.freedesktop.org (that include a Minimal distribution of Xorg). I thought
that the problem was generated by a strange mix of Xorg binaries + XFree
libraries, but now , that I have a pure Xorg installation, the problem persists.

UPDATE:

I've just tried a Martrox G450 Card with the MGA driver and XDGA works like a
charm .

The problem seem only related only to ATI/RADEON driver

A backtrace of the crash would be useful. As a sidenote, why do you use DGA and
not XVideo for video playback?

I couldn't find any backtrace in the Xorg logfile in /var/log .

I don't use DGA with MPlayer, Mplayer is simply the best application to test it.

I use DGA mainly for XMame because Xmame looks really good with DGA + Filter 2/3 .

starting with the 6.8.99.14 snapshot, on linux systems, the X server can print
its own backtrace when it crashes.  please confirm that these bugs are still
valid with 6.8.99.14 or later, and if they are please attach a the server log
from the crash.

Marking broken (status null/blank) bugs in xorg with no activity in a long time as fixed. Please reopen if you think it's necessary, but first do a search if a similar bug report is already filed and in a NEW/ASSIGNED state. These bugs do not currently show in most search results as they do not have any status.
