looks similar to Bug
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=166665
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2984
but still present in evince 2.30.3, with
poppler/cairo 0.14.1 in ubuntu 10.10dev

also reported at https://bugs.launchpad.net/evince/+bug/470157 , which has screen shots comparing evince and acroread.

Install poppler-data and reopen the bug if after doing so you still miss characters.
Comment 2 sam tygier 2010-07-20 14:18:09 UTC
indeed that fixes it.

would it be possible for evince to detect the error, and alert the user to install the package?
Comment 3 Albert Astals Cid 2010-07-20 14:32:13 UTC
Not at the moment, that would need some code in poppler core
