After a recent discussion on IRC, it was acknowledged that some form of cairo_pdf_surface_get_filename() might be a viable addition.  It'd return the filename that was passed to the constructor, or NULL if no name was supplied.

Presumably, this would also be viable for PS, SVG, etc.
