Description Thomas Richter 2010-12-23 13:55:45 UTC
Hi all,

My system crashes reproducibly running
- Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid 64 bit
- Radeon driver on latest Kernel from Ubuntu 10.04
- ATI HIS 4670 iceq
- Google Earth 5.2 or 6.0 beta (doesn't matter which version)

How to reproduce:
- Run Google Earth and zoom into the globe
- Start Firefox, goto Google maps; zoom in, out, pan
The whole system usually hangs within 30 seconds.
Starting Firefox is no really needed, but it accelerates the problem.

Effect:
- Screen turns black, white, sometimes with stripes.
- Ctrl-Alt-BckSpc/Fx does not work.
- Have to power off the machine.

Workaround:
- Have to use ATI's fglrx; the problem disappears with this driver, so I'm pretty sure it's the radeon driver in the Linux kernel causing the problem. Here is a delta of packages I got when installing fglrx:

I tried switching back to radeon: problem is there!
Switched again to fglrx: problem gone!

Kindly look into this; fglrx has other problems (like compiz effects being terribly slow)

Thanks&br

Here's the xorg log.
By the way, the problem has been there for the past 8 months.
