some information about my system

have a look at https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/460616 and http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Xorg_RandR_1.2#the_Virtual_screen as well

The i915 driver does not seem to have Xvideo support for a virtual screen extending beyond 2048 pixels in either dimension. Such a dual-head setup will play the audio track but not the video of an avi file, for example.

Test case:
dual-head with i915 driver, I use a netbook with internal resolution of 1024x600 and an external display with 1680x1050. Stacked on top of each other in dual-head configuration (600+1050 < 2048) the video will display fine. When side by side (1680+1024 > 2048) only a black square is shown instead of the video.

Please have the courtesy of testing upstream components before filing an upstream bug. The fix for this bug has been included in stable releases for over a year.
