Description benderamp 2011-01-15 02:05:48 UTC
I have xorg 7.6 from opensuse factory, ATI r600 card with opensource driver.

The system randomly freezes - usually on some action. For example, I have browser opened on one desktop and yast downloading some packages on the other desktop. While working in the browser everything is smooth, but once I click on the desktop switch applet, the system freezes forever - picture on the monitor does not change, keyboard and mouse do not work (eg - caps lock button does not change the indicator light). The action might be always different and would happen at random moment - once I clicked on link to open page with flash and system freezed, the last time I just clicked on konqueror icon on plasma launcher and system freezed again.

While X freezed, the system continues to live under it - the sound plays, alt+sysrq keys work, also after reboot /var/log/messages shows lines with timestamp after freeze (for example, the freeze was at 8:25 - the panel clocks show this value, and /var/log/messages has lines with 8:26, 8:27 if I do not reboot immediately).

Also noted, that sometimes the system is close to freeze - on some action it freezes for a second just like described above, but then it get released and all continue to work just fine.

I can attach all required log info, but I'm not sure how to get xorg.log file at the moment of the freeze because at the moment of freeze it is unaccessible, and after reboot it is overriden with new values.

Xorg.0.log.old

After rebooting after next hang I have noted, that Xorg.0.log.old contains additional lines:

[ 7962.887] [mi] EQ overf[mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop.

Disabling KMS by adding "nomodeset" parameter to kernel options in grub removed the problem with hangs, but 3D now does not work.
Comment 3 benderamp 2011-02-04 14:19:52 UTC
I have recently updated kernel to 2.6.38-rc2 from opensuse repo (I had 2.6.37 final before that) and still receive same behavior (though just after update things worked fine without hangs for several hours and I started to believe that the problem has gone).

And now I have just received the same hang even with kernel booted with nomodeset option - started to write 800mb meego image to the flash drive with dd command.

After reboot cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old gives same messages:

Reopen according to this comment: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=32393#c35

Some other comments from that thread:

>I am still receiving this problem rather often. Just update xorg version to the
latest from opensuse 11.4 (Name: xorg-x11-server; Version: 7.6_1.9.3)
repository and received hang as usual.

>Current hangs are like I had initially - complete desktop hang - mouse does not
move, caps lock does not work, but alt+sysrq+b does reboot.

>In 90% of cases I receive this hang on one and the same action - I have
konqueror window opened with multiple tabs and http://www.indiedb.com/articles
is one of them. The hang happens when I switch to the tab with this page -
don't even have to press "reload" or something like that - just bring this page
to top -> receive hang (or same thing if this page was on top, switched to
another desktop, then back to the desktop with this page -> same hang). This
will not happen from the 1st time - after reboot it opens fine, then I can
mention some lags, then it can make the system look really loaded for 5-10
secs, but still does not hang, but the next time after that it would hang with
90% probability.

>Hello, I have updated to kernel 3.0.4-2 if that makes sense

> rpm -qi xorg-x11-server
Name : xorg-x11-server
Version : 7.6_1.9.3
Release : 158.5

>xorg-x11-server 7.6_1.9.3 from opensuse factory (could not find any newer
there) and still receive hangs every day.

Mass closure: This bug has been untouched for more than six years, and is not
obviously still valid. Please reopen this bug or file a new report if you continue to experience issues with current releases.
