On a Dell E6500 with

Ubuntu maverick 10.10 64bit

Linux version 2.6.35-25-generic (buildd@crested) (gcc version 4.4.5 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.4.4-14ubuntu5) ) #44-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 21 17:40:44 UTC 2011

X.Org X Server 1.9.0

libdrm-intel1 2.4.23~glasen~maverick~ppa3

libgl1-mesa-dri 7.9~git20100924-0ubuntu2

xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.14~glasen~maverick~ppa3

kde 4.6

Severe display corruption after the following:

1) Attach external monitor to VGA connector
2) xrandr --output VGA1 --auto
3) xrandr --output LVDS1 --off

at 3, everything breaks as in the attached screenshot. Note the messed up fonts in console, and the missing chars in calculator.

I am sure that this was working fine until about 10 days ago. After that I upgraded a few things (kde from 4.5.5 to 4.6 and xserver intel drivers to latest
snapshot).
