The pkg-config man-page (perhaps also in other places) mentions that things should be added to 
configure.in. It would be nice to have this changed to "configure.ac" instead, which is the standard, 
preferred filename for the configure file (see info autoconf).

pkg-config 0.18 has now been released with a fix for this bug.
