Are you using switcheroo? Does the monitor work properly when you select the discrete card in the bios? I suspect the i2c mux is not getting swapped properly when you switch between the gpus. Using vga_switcheroo. played with "xrandr --addmode" and 1680x1050 work, so it's a detection problem.
