[Problem]
Black screen on boot; system otherwise seems to have loaded correctly.

[Original Description]
Using Ubuntu Natty up-to-date on a Dell Vostro 1500 with a GeForce 8600M GT GPU. When I boot on the LiveCD or on a fresh install, nouveau seems to load correctly but all I get is a black screen.

On the attached Xorg.log, the lines at 27.960 is when I press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to see if I can get a tty (I still get a black screen), and 31.965 is when I Ctrl+Alt+Del to reboot the computer.

Note that it kind of works when nVidia proprietary drivers are installed or when I use nomodeset (it actually uses Vesa instead of Nouveau.

Please let me know if you need additional informations.

I wonder if this is the problem that causes the HDMI output to be selected and turns off the screen graphics. As in...

https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/+bug/724722

If you have an HDMI output, try hooking it to something ...

No HDMI, just a VGA, but I'll try.

Actual dmesg (without "nomodeset")
Comment 7 Christopher James Halse Rogers 2011-04-04 04:55:12 UTC
The many
[ 17.961632] composite sync not supported
messages might be a part of the problem as they correspond to the
[ 18.479] (II) NOUVEAU(0): DDCModeFromDetailedTiming: 1440x900 Warning: We only handle separate sync.
Xorg.0.log warnings.

The dmesg would be more useful if you added “drm.debug=0x04” to the kernel command line; that turns on KMS debug messages, and since this is (at least) a modesetting problem they're likely to be useful.

You say that the nvidia binary driver *kind of* works? Is this one of the laptops where the nvidia driver doesn't work properly?
Comment 8 Mathieu Marquer 2011-04-04 05:04:39 UTC
I agree that I was unclear in that sentence:
* It works fine with nVidia proprietary driver
* If I use the "nomodeset" kernel setting (without nVidia proprietary driver installed), it only works because VESA driver is used instead of Nouveau.

I'll attach a dmesg with the “drm.debug=0x04” parameter tonight.

dmesg with drm.debug=0x04

Here it is, at 42.xxx is when I switch to tty1 using Ctrl+Alt+F1 (I still get a black screen although it's still turned on)

It appears that this bug report has laid dormant for quite a while. Sorry we haven't gotten to it. Since we fix bugs all the time, chances are pretty good that your issue has been fixed with the latest software. Please give it a shot. (Linux kernel 3.10.7, xf86-video-nouveau 1.0.9, mesa 9.1.6, or their git versions.) If upgrading to the latest isn't an option for you, your distro's bugzilla is probably the right destination for your bug report.

In an effort to clean up our bug list, we're pre-emptively closing all bugs that haven't seen updates since 2011. If the original issue remains, please make sure to provide fresh info, see http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/Bugs/ for what we need to see, and re-open this one.

Thanks,

The Nouveau Team
