Description Jonathan Leighton 2005-06-22 09:33:13 UTC
As the title says. See the URL for the context (it was a while back now).

Does anybody have any views about how this should work? I'd be grateful if
someone (Jon?) could give me some idea (or point me to a page) about what
exactly our affiliations with the various other projects are. I figure if I'm
going to write about them, I need to know what they are first ; ).
Comment 1 Jonathan Leighton 2005-06-22 09:34:12 UTC
forget to CC the ML ;)
Comment 2 Jon Phillips 2005-06-22 13:46:17 UTC
http://openclipart.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Affiliations

Well, I think that the primary affiliations should be on the main page, but all
affiliations should go on this wiki page:
http://openclipart.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Affiliations

We could just provide a link in the left hand menu to this, or somewhere on the
site.

I think we really need to align our project with other projects.

I've been in kontact (hahaha) with the klipart project about us absorbing their
project into our project. I think the more focus we can have and references,
then the better this project will fare in the long run.

So, I think that we should:

A.) have major affiliates on the main page somewhere, possibly more prominent
B.) Could make these affiliates be rotating, because of limited space
C.) Come up with a good strategy for listing our affiliation on other project's
pages.

Okay... maybe I mis-understood a bit then (*changes summary*).

Anyway, few points:

 * Major vs. Minor affiliates -- what is the difference, and who decides this?
 * Rotating affiliates sounds like a good idea, but whereabouts on the page?
Will it be just the "major" ones, or all of them?
 * I don't understand point C that you made ?
 * I don't think linking Wiki pages (ie
http://openclipart.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Affiliations) from the main site is a
good idea because the design of the Wiki is different (leaving the visitor
feeling disorientated) and because we are using the wiki as a collaborative
notepad, rather than a publishing system
Comment 4 Nicu Buculei 2005-06-23 07:54:30 UTC
Major vs. Minor - in our wiki, a requirement is considered
"http://www.openclipart.org/ link on the front page", this can be the criteria:
- they link to us on the front page -> major (Inkscape, Scribus)
- they link to us elsewhere on the website -> minor (all others)

OTOH, considering this requirement, is not fair from us to request link from
affiliates on their front page but we to link to them from the wiki (BTW, wht if
we decide to use rel="nofollow" for all links in the wiki in order to discourage
spammers?)

Alternate criteria can be how the affiliate contibuted to OCAL
development/promotion.
Comment 5 Jonathan Leighton 2005-06-23 08:07:33 UTC
I think we should consider each affiliate on a case-by-case basis and come to a
decision about their "status". In that we can take into account where they'd
link us, their contributions, etc.

Regarding nofollow: it's pointless and won't work.
Comment 6 Jon Phillips 2005-06-23 12:59:56 UTC
Yeah, there is no need to classify affiliates really. I think a better way would
be just to auto-rotate them on the main page once there are like more than 10. I
think to consider it otherwise is kinda weird favoritism.

WRT to linking to wiki pages. Well, maybe the wiki should look more like our
site then? It is just easier at this point than maintaining a bunch of pages.

Please add any comments and possible affiliates to the wiki page. Man, I never
though I would be having a discussion on the bugtracker. :)
Comment 7 Jonathan Leighton 2005-06-24 09:27:26 UTC
Ok, no classifications -- they'll rotate on the main page. Where abouts though?
The footer is not very prominent. I'm voting for it going in the left sidebar.
In fact, if we put the affiliates in the left sidebar, can we just drop the
footer? (In other words... are validation buttons really that useful?)

It'd be great to integrate the Wiki into the OCAL site, but I don't think that's
possible because it seems (from looking at wiki.pl) that it isn't templatable.
So I dunno what to do there...

And what's wrong with a discussion in the bug tracker? Works quite well IMHO ; )

I wonder if there is a way in bugzilla to have the last comment like a
replied-to email. I have added the "> " below to track the conversation. I think
the conversation on the bugtracker + ml is great!

Man, that is already really crowded. Maybe the top bar needs to be rethought
with the addition of affiliates. Your idea should be mocked up. Maybe take a
screenshot of the site and test adding elements in Inkscape. We have much
content on our page.

Well, footers are good to capt the page, but if there is no reason, then yes, it
would be fine to get rid of. Its not really in the way or anything... ;)

Yeah, well the stylesheet is here: http://www.openclipart.org/css/wiki.css

Already agree...

Try the "reply" button ;)

Ok, yeah you're right. Sometime over the next week (hopefully sooner rather than
later), I'll mock up what we talked about in IRC a couple of weeks back. I'll
integrate a place for an affiliate link into that.

Yes, but the problem with the Wiki is that the user will be disorientated when
they go there. This is because it doesn't have the navigational stuff that the
main site does, which of course cannot be done with CSS. That's the main problem
with the Wiki IMO. And let's not even talk about frames ;)

Move this to the wiki. Closing.
