Is there a reason you are using UMS rather than KMS? On Ubuntu 10.10 x64 on the same machine I experienced the problem explained on https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/619365 As a workaround I had to disable KMS for radeon driver by running: # echo options radeon modeset=0 > /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf After recent upgrade to Ubuntu 11.04 I didn't remove that setting. Your hint was helpful: I enabled KMS and now Xorg starts fine using the radeon driver. So, for me the problem has been solved. If someone wants to investigate the issue with KMS disabled I'm attaching the output of gdb.
