This is closely related to part of bug 26696. The debug message is misleading—Gabble doesn't support contacts with JIDs which don't have a node part, partly to reduce the risk of trying to add 'helen.love' (rather than 'helen.love@server.com') to their roster and not understanding why it doesn't work.
