Would like to have the highlight feature available in Calc.  I think the summary says it all, but just in case, here's a description of what I mean:

Double click a cell and type a five word sentence.  Say you want to "highlight" three words.  As of now you can change the background color (of the whole cell), text color, but you can't simply highlight certain words like you can in Writer.  

Not sure if the ODF spec supports this or not.

Yes, I also sometimes missed it, and if it's possible to have a character colot, it should not be too difficult to get a background, too, if it's part of ODF definition.

EXCEL 2010 (Starter) I can't find such a feature.

@Rainer: No, I'm not aware that there are considerations for that. Most of "Calc" is based on the assumption that the "artifact" are the cells. So, the quick background formatting is tied to the cells instead of characters. I don't know whether ODF supports that. The most simple implementation would be to add the "Background" tab to "Format - Characters ...".

@Steven: Do you refer to highlighting of words to make them stand out visually, or does highlighting refer to adding notes / comments to those cells? What is your use case? How much content is in the cells, so that this highlighting is required?

Yeah, the idea is to make those words stand out visually.  The amount of content can vary from a few words to a couple of paragraphs.  I'm creating a spreadsheet to help a friend keep track of medical issues/medications used, plasma levels, etc.

I was using different color text and underlining, but he said he'd prefer highlighting, I was a bit dismayed that you couldn't do that.  I also note the hyperlink tab is missing in the charter formatting dialog, I think that could come in handy for someone too.

Sorry for multiple replies here.  As of now, I'm drawing rectangles over the text and using transparency to simulate the effect.
