Description petr vanek 2011-09-22 05:04:49 UTC
I'm one of Razor-qt team members. And now we see our userbase grow enough to get more attention we'd like to mark our special tools as OnlyShowIn: RAZOR to prevent confuse other DE users.

What's the official procedure to register new category, please?

About:

Razor-qt is an advanced, easy-to-use, and fast desktop environment based on Qt technologies. It has been tailored for users who value simplicity, speed, and intuitive interface. Unlike desktop environments, Razor-qt also works fine with weak machines.

I feel the project is a bit young, so I'm unsure about adding it to the list right now.

I'd feel more comfortable adding it to the spec when it starts being included in distributions (instead of being available though an OBS project): this is a kind of guarantee that the project will stay around.

Don't get me wrong, it's not a way to make your life more difficult; it's just that I'm careful when adding new environments to the OnlyShowIn registry.

Start a discussion on the mailing list and explain why the category is needed.

Vincent, why is action necessary in the first place? Wouldn't it be simpler and a lot friendlier if DEs somehow defined their name somewhere publicly available, and passed that name as an argument to whichever app handles menus etc?

Razor registered for OnlyShowIn in the spec, and change to desktop-file-utils pushed.

FWIW, I went with Razor instead of RAZOR since the Razor-qt website never uses uppercase like this.

Vincent, please see comment #3. Why is the DE name registration centralized?

To avoid conflicts.

thanks for you effort. When we can expect desktop-file-utils 0.20 relase, please?

Conflicts can be handled differently; there are not that many DEs out there, if a name already exists, it can be recommended for the DE to pick their site's hostname, eg if there already was a "Razor" before, razor could have picked "razor-qt.org".

Just an example.

I'm waiting for a patch so we can validate desktop actions. So soon after that. (I'll write the patch myself if I have no news before FOSDEM)
