Okay, this is a small but.. Using 7.0rc0 and r300_dri.so is build with Mesa 6.3.
1 and of course xf86-video-ati, but still "man radeon" says:

It is only supported on Radeon  series  up to  and  including  9200  (9500/9700 
and newer unsupported).

It should be: 

It is supported on Radeon series up to and including 92x0 (9500/9700 support is 
experimental)

No, Render is still unaccelerated on r300 based cards. I'd guess enough is known
about the cards to add support, but noone has done it.
You're right though about the marketing-enhanced 9200 card (aka 9250...)
