I still get total-system-freeze on my laptop with ATI FireGL T2 radeon and desktop with Radeon 9600 AGP. Solution: use the ATI proprietary drivers. I've had this problem since 6.9 pre releases on Mandrake, and I still have it on the latest 6.9 packages from Mandriva. Xorg 6.8.2 was the last release that workd for me. I currently totally avoid the radeon driver that comes with Xorg releases. That's unlikely the same issue as reported in this entry, but FWIW there's a good chance that your issues are resolved in xf86-video-ati 6.6.0 or 6.5.8. Closing this bug due to the lack of activity from the bug poster. If this still is an issue with a current version of xorg, reopen. |

I'm trying to get my radeon based motherboard to operate correctly with something other than the vesa driver. xorg starts and runs 1600x1200 resolution perfectly with the "vesa" driver. When I use the "Radeon" driver however a problem occurs. when I run startx the following happens: The tweed/hatched X background comes up. The mouse pointer is present. The mouse pointer can move but is *incredibly* slow and jerky. The background is redrawn (top to bottom) in white. (my guess is because the window manager did that.) Then the machine locks up solid. real solid magic-sys-req doesn't even work. (maybe because the window manager requested a particular graphics request that causes the lock up) Resolutions up to 1024x768 work just fine. 1280x1024 and 1600x1200 exhibit the above behavior. And it happens exactly the same, every time. It's not like a lot of the other... "I can work for a random amount of time before it locks up" reports that I'v read. This happens whether or not I comment out the dri module. You can hit Ctl-Alt-1 anytime before the lock up to switch to a virtual terminal. The lock up doesn't occur until you switch back to the X terminal. For what it's worth. the latest fglrx drivers from ATI exhibit the exact same problem. Which I think is really, really weird and suggest that the problem lies with some item in the kernel supporting the video, like PCI Express support or AGP support. (I'm using the onboard motherboard video so I don't know whether that is connected like an AGP device or as a PCI express device or as neither.) My equipment/configuration includes the following: Shuttle ST20G5 barebones motherboard/case. Radeon Xpress 200 (M I think) chipset. ULI 1573 chipset. Debian unstable xorg 6.8.2.dfsg.1-4 (.config as attachment) kernel 2.6.12.5 (.config as attachment) Any ideas?
