The top level Makefile in the monolithic tree still has RELEASE = "Release 6.8".
So when building it says:

xc # make World

Building Release 6.8.

I hope you checked the configuration parameters in ./config/cf
to see if you need to pass BOOTSTRAPCFLAGS.

Yes, we haven't bumped the version numbers yet in a number of places.
