Download pdf from http://apl.aip.org/resource/1/applab/v100/i18/p183308_s1 and render its first page using poppler (I checked it with okular, qpdfview and evince). Rendering of the first page using poppler-0.20 takes about 2 seconds on my computer while the same operation occupies less than 0.5 sec with poppler-0.18.4.

lcms2 is "better" but "slower" than lcms1, compile without lcms2 (with lcms1) if you can't accept the balance, note lcms1 is deprecated by its author and may contain vulnerabilities
