Looks like there's likely no bug here.

It's hard to write a test suite that can get pixel-identical test results on a
variety of systems when text is involved. Based on the diff images here, I would
guess that your run differs from the reference image in wither the font that was
used or else the version of freetype.

What we could use is better instructions on how to get repeatable results, (such
as what version of freetype to use, where to get the Bitstream Vera fonts).
Maybe it would even make sense to include a font with the test suite?

Anyway, it looks to me like your build of cairo is working just fine.
