Description Elmar Stellnberger 2012-08-21 07:09:41 UTC
If I boot with my old setup (see attached xorg.conf) then I get an entire system crash at a black screen. Not even the SysRq keys can help to escape. That setup was still working with 1.7.7-14. Now with 7.6_1.12.3-1.2.3 I get a black screen.

You are using UMS which is no longer supported. Do you still have problems when you use KMS? If you really want to use UMS, you might try xf86-video-ati 6.14.6.

Also please attach your dmesg output.
Comment 5 Elmar Stellnberger 2012-08-21 14:19:07 UTC
I have not re-filed a bug report for KMS though it now got worse than ever before (mere pixel soup on both monitors, no way to start X) except downstreams (https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=776569). Should I additionally file on kernel.org or here on freedesktop.org? (dmesg coming soon).

Well; the power switch is the only thing that still works; no crash then ;) - we need to resolve Bug 53873 for getting the keyboard up if we want any interactive debugging.

Fortunately it is not the dual screenery that makes Xorg crash. I can boot in single screen mode without xorg.conf and then activate the second screen via xrandr. This is a bit unhandy since I will have to configure KDE for the second screen on every new boot by hand (i.e. plasma panel & icons) but there is a way to get Xorg well up and running!

Fortunately as Bug 53873 is more or less resolved I could go on to get a backtrace;: posted as own bug to make things clearer for you: *** Bug 54044 *** (The fact that it did not accept any more keyboard and mouse input had resembled a crash=).
