there should be an option to --disable-tests

so one can work around blocker bugs like https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=55771

and save a lot of time when compiling on slow or even emulated cpu's where the build of the tests alone can take hours

That looks relatively easy. However, according to the automake docs, DIST_SUBDIRS shouldn't be needed to be set:
