To me this looks like it could be an Ubuntu Unity issue. What is the otuput of xrandr when the problem occurs? Does it also happen if you make the corresponding changes in the Unity / GNOME display configuration tool? samit vats, Ubuntu 12.10 reached EOL on May 16, 2014.
