for some reason there are C++ symbols that change between poppler 0.4.5 and
0.5.x, the thing is that if i install poppler CVS in my debian latex stops
working because one of those symbols in GooString. Wouldn't it be a good idea to
at least change the smallest version (i think it is called micro version, but
i'm not sure) number in the dynamic link library that compiling poppler generates?

0.4.x and 0.5.x are binary imcompatible.

I've updated soname on cvs.
