Currently, LO on OSX uses the Quicktime framework for allowing insertion and playback of multimedia formats.

Unfortunately, the number of codecs supported out of the box is fairly small in comparison to other multimedia frameworks, e.g. VLC, and extending the list of Quicktime supported formats through extensions or plug-ins is also somewhat error prone or even limited to specific versions of the OS.

This makes inserting and playing back multimedia files into ODF documents both error prone, problematic and frustrating for the user.

It would be nice to be able to automatically have LO detect and use the VLC framework if installed on OSX as there is a greater variety of built-in supported codecs.

Adding Michael to CC.

Am unsure as to which component this should be raised against, so I chose the graphics stack. If it isn't the right one, please correct.

This is a valid enhancement request, so setting status to "NEW".
