Hello,

Problem description:
Running any Media Player, Webcam App (Cheese or Guvcview), hangs the GPU.


Expected Results:
Running any Media Player, Webcam App (Cheese or Guvcview) should not hang the GPU.


Obtained Results:
Running any Media Player, Webcam App (Cheese or Guvcview) freezes the system for a few seconds, but afterwards (3 sec. approx.) I can close the application that caused the GPU hang.
Video output is non-existing in Cheese or Guvcview (I only see the black window where the video should be).
If I still try to take a picture with Cheese for example, it will capture the photo correctly!
When playing a movie file, I get no video (only sound output is available).


When does it happen: Always (no special steps are necessary to reproduce this error).

Hardware being used:
Classmate Netbook
CPU: Celeron 847 @ 1,1GHz (SandyBridge architecture)
Chipset: NM70
GPU: Intel HD2000 based (according to some websites)

Software being used:
Debian 6.0 Squeeze Based Distro (Canaima OS)
Kernels used:
2.6.32-5-686 (with this kernel the system works *fine*)
3.2.0-0.bpo.4-686-pae (Backports Kernel -> with this kernel, the GPU hangs)
3.7.6 (Obtained from http://kernel.org/ and compiled by me -> with this kernel, the GPU hangs)

Is this a regression?

Please consider trying a newer kernel.

At the very least, please upgrade to the latest 3.2 stable release. There have been GPU hang related fixes since the 3.2.35 you seem to be running.

-intel-2.13.0 is ancient and has numerous bugs present in the error state you attached.

Like previously posted I was using 3 different kernels.
And one of them was the recent 3.7.6 version (04-Feb-2013)
So it's very recent.

You were absolutely correct!

I had to update the intel driver (but from experimental repo) and it worked perfectly!
I now have video reproduction and webcam functionality!
All this with kernel v3.7.6

Hum... but I'm now facing two problems:

Prob1) gears outputs the following:
---------------------------------------------------
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: Couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual
---------------------------------------------------


Prob2) Entering S3 works OK the first time, but if I resume and try to enter S3 again, the system locks up with the screen described by the attached photo.
At this point, I can only perform a force poweroff.

I have always had some problems with S3. Could it also be a GFX related issue?

Can you also attach your Xorg.0.log with the updated driver? For some reason it is not loading GLX, and I'm not sure why.

I don't think the S3 error is us. The failure there is being reported for another device.

As for GLX, the issue appears to be that the path compiled into the xserver for the location of the DRI2 drivers doesn't match your current installation. Should be resolved by updating libgl1-mesa-dri.

Right, I missed that. For future reference, it's usually most helpful to post the logs and dumps against the most recent one you try.
