40-nonlatin.conf

There are three generic font, serif sans-serif and monospace.
The chinese font family Song Ti are serif.
The chinese font family Hei Ti are sans-serif.
And only "WenQuanYi Zen Hei Mono",and "AR PL New Sung Mono",have Mono.
There is another font family call "Kai Ti".This font is none of the three,should not be in 40-nonlatin.conf 65-nonlatin.conf.

I have edit this two file,and add two new font"WenQuanYi Zen Hei"(now the default Chinese font for Ubuntu) and "Droid Sans Fallback"(From Android.),and two Hei Ti from Microsoft.

Please attach a patch instead of files you've changed.
Comment 3 Akira TAGOH 2013-03-08 02:24:56 UTC
BTW please doo not add Droid Sans Fallback on at that position. it may works as a fallback as it's named but it doesn't necessarily looks so good for its covered languages.

Aside from that, you said Song Ti is serif though, it looks like you are going to remove ZYSong18030 from serif too. is there any reason to do so?

and do not comment about ja for Chinese font. usually glyph design isn't acceptable for them.

Anyway, need further work on this.

fix chinese patch

OK,this is the patch.
1. Remove ZYSong18030 from serif because there are two.
2. Droid Sans Fallback,main for Chinsese,and have remove the Korean Hangul.I have remove this line,as you like.
3. <family>AR PL ShanHeiSun Uni</family> <!--han (ja,zh-cn,zh-tw) -->
This font is Song Ti,Serif. Not SS.
4. This bug related to all CJK users.Not only Chinese.I only care about Chinese.
Maybe you should not.

Yangtse has provided needed info in comment 4; I agree with Yangtse's opinion.

* I suggest to use "思源黑体 CN Light" as a higher prioriety for zh-cn sans-serif font. It's a free and opensource font issued by adobe and google, and is good for screen display. "Wenquanyi Zenhei" and "Microsoft Yahei" should follow.

* I suggest to use "AR PL UMing CN" as a higher prioriety for zh-cn serif font. It's shipped with most every linux distro. "WenQuanYi Bitmap Song" and "Simsun" should follow.

Attached is the proposed patch.

* Chinese fonts are not always serifed. Song Ti are serif fonts, but Hei Ti are sans serif.
* We have good open-source free fonts available in most linux destros:
  Source Han Sans (named by Adobe) and Noto Sans CJK (named by Google).
* We also have Founder Type fonts which are free for non-commercial use.

Tested and it looks much better now than the previous default conf.

Comment 9 Mingye Wang (Arthur2e5) 2017-05-24 01:39:04 UTC
patch 131446, 65-nonlatin.conf:

> +<family>Source Han Sans CN</family>
> +<family>Source Han Sans TW</family>
> +<family>Noto Sans CJK SC</family> <!-- han (zh-cn) ... -->
> +<family>Noto Sans CJK TC</family> <!-- han (zh-tw) ... -->

Source Han Sans CN/TW are regional subsets that only contain characters from the national charset, while Noto Sans *CJK* are completely covered copies of Source Han/Noto CJK with a default of either CN or TW. (With a properly lang-tagged document, either font will give the correct localized result.) Consider adding the corresponding subset/full fonts: the full Source Han Sans SC/TC for the Source side, and the Noto Sans SC/TC subset for the Noto side.

> +<family>WenQuanYi Zen Hei</family> <!-- han (zh-cn,zh-tw) ... -->

Regarding WenQuanYi Zen Hei: A few characters in this font can look out of pretty awkward. Droid Sans Fallback's Chinese-ified version, WQY MicroHei has better coverage and less screwups in terms of shape (there's not much to screw up when you make glyphs of prefabricated pieces...), and hence it should be preferred over Zen Hei in the list.

>  <family>AR PL ShanHeiSun Uni</family>
>  <family>AR PL New Sung</family>

Leftover serif fonts to be eliminated.

* * *

Maybe include Source Han Serif/Noto Serif CJK in the serif list too? Subjectively speaking, I think these new stuff look better than SimSun and AR PL. (Fallbacks can always work the rest out.) They have a nice bunch of font weights, too.

* * *

Kai Ti can technically go into the cursive or script category, but only if everyone thinks including cursive in 65-nonlatin is a good idea.

* * *

CC'ing Jeff Bai as we have been looking at this for quite a few times...
