Every single external header and library we depend on should be tested for in
configure.ac, including testing for specific functions if the API has changed
(FreeType, I'm looking at you).  The idea is that the compilation process should
never fail for missing dependencies.

If you're feeling adventurous, optional dependencies could be made just that --
optional.  Used if they're there, not if they're not.
