Commit 5ee86c4190f9e in the current tree causes the card to switch to software fbcon, but only after X is attempted to start.

FWIW: I cannot revert this commit, so no verification that it's a combination or just this one.

Also happens occasionally (Firefox) under 'normal' circumstances. But after the lock-up, it happens more often.

Fixed with commit d2989b534ef6834ebf2425aecc040b894b567c91 "drm/nvc0/gr: fix gpc firmware regression" .
