This happens with facebook chat, at least.

I have installed:

empathy 3.8.3
telepathy-gabble 0.17.3

A buddy reported that the exact same thing happens with KDE IM:

Steps to reproduce:

Open empathy, wait a while. Your friends' avatars suddenly disappear.
