Description peterjamesdonnelly 2006-05-20 02:53:15 UTC
The 4Gb Samsung YP-Z5 fails to mount (automatically or manually) under ubuntu
breezy and dapper as well as older versions of Gentoo (2005) and Knoppix
(3.8.2). The YP-Z5 is an MTP device but can also (according to the manual)
mount as USB mass storage.

lshal with device actually plugged in!

Unfortuntely, I'm a muppet and attached a version of this file without the
player connected.

I can't see a volume for this device. You should start hal with --verbose=yes --
use-syslog (additional to your current parameters) and add related information
from /var/log/messages since plugin the device.

I had the same problem, but an upgrade of the firmware of the player (from 1.03
to 2.33) has fixed it.

See http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1126 , especially the
changelog entry that says:

- Fixed 4GB UMS mode support in some early devices with firmware lower than 1.08
US.

The upgrade process was painless...

Is there a way (e.g. via sysfs) to detect the firmware version of the device?
Btw. I need the output of lshal with the working firmware to be able to add the
device to HAL.
Comment 7 Patrick Cherry 2006-08-03 00:02:42 UTC
I've attached the lshal output for my YP Z5. Interestingly I notice that the
USB id for the one previously submitted is different from mine. His is 04e8
(Samsung) 503c and mine is 04e8 5041.

Also there is a value for firmware in the lshal, which is
  storage.firmware_version = '0003'  (string)
on mine and 0006 on the previously uploaded lshal. I'm not sure this
corresponds to anything under for the YP-Z5 though.

I'll also upload the kernel log relating to this device.
