There seems to be no way to get the thesaurus to work in Eng GB.

tools->language->thesaurus works fine for me with the vanilla LibreOffice as downloaded from the website. If your libreoffice is provided by a distribution you may have to install optional thesarus support (http://askubuntu.com/questions/85752/how-to-install-a-thesaurus-in-libreoffice)
